5-Day Bali Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

A complete 5-day Bali itinerary covering Ubud, Canggu, and Uluwatu. Temples, rice terraces, beaches, and where to actually eat.

TripSketchApril 30, 2026

Bali in 5 days is doable if you're strategic about geography. The mistake first-timers make is trying to "see everything" — Bali isn't one place. It's a chain of distinct regions with very different vibes, and traffic between them is brutal.

This itinerary splits the trip into three bases: Ubud (culture + nature), Canggu (beach + cafes), and Uluwatu (cliffs + sunsets). Less moving, more living.

Day 1: Arrive + Ubud

Land at Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS). Pre-arrange a transfer to Ubud (~90 min, ~$25). Check into a villa with a rice paddy view — there are hundreds under $80/night.

Afternoon: Easy walk through Ubud Center. Visit the Sacred Monkey Forest (~$5) — hide your sunglasses, the monkeys are thieves.

Dinner: Locavore To Go for affordable farm-to-table, or Hujan Locale for upscale Indonesian. Reserve.

Day 2: Ubud — Culture & Nature

Sunrise (4am start): Hike Mount Batur (~$50 with guide). 2-hour climb in the dark, sunrise from the summit at 6am over the caldera. Worth the early alarm.

Late morning: Recover with breakfast at Sayuri Healing Food (vegan) or Pison Cafe.

Afternoon: Tegalalang Rice Terraces ($2 entry). Skip the swings — they're tourist traps. Walk the terraces instead, free and prettier.

Sunset: Campuhan Ridge Walk — free, paved, 30 minutes one way through emerald hills.

Evening: Traditional Kecak fire dance at Pura Dalem Taman Kaja (~$8). Goosebumps-level experience.

Day 3: Ubud → Canggu

Move to Canggu in the morning (~90 min drive, $30). It's the digital nomad / surf town.

Lunch: Crate Cafe for the classic Canggu brunch (expect a line) or Milu by Nook.

Afternoon: Beach day at Echo Beach or Berawa. Surf lessons run ~$30 for 90 minutes.

Sunset: La Brisa beach club. Drinks at sunset. Get there by 5pm for a good seat.

Dinner: Mason (modern Indonesian) or Warung Local (cheap & cheerful).

Day 4: Canggu — Slow Day

This is your "doing nothing in Bali" day. Sleep in. Eat well. Get a $15 massage. Hit the pool.

Optional: Day trip to Tanah Lot temple — but only if you're a temple completionist. The crowds are intense at sunset.

Better idea: Hire a scooter ($5/day) and explore Canggu's back lanes, smoothie bowls, and yoga studios. The Practice has drop-in classes.

Dinner: Penny Lane (rooftop, modern Asian) or splurge at The Lawn.

Day 5: Canggu → Uluwatu → Departure

Move to Uluwatu in the morning (90 min, $35). The southern peninsula is dramatic cliffs and turquoise water.

Lunch: Single Fin at Uluwatu — surf views, decent food.

Afternoon: Padang Padang Beach (the one from Eat Pray Love) or Nyang Nyang Beach (a hike down, far less crowded).

Sunset: Uluwatu Temple ($5). Sit on the cliff edge and watch the sun drop into the Indian Ocean. Stay for the Kecak performance at 6pm.

Evening: If your flight is late, dinner at Ulu Cliffhouse or Single Fin Sunday session (parties are legendary).

Practical tips

  • Visa: Most nationalities get visa-on-arrival ($35) — bring USD cash
  • Currency: Indonesian Rupiah. ATMs everywhere; use ones inside banks
  • Transport: GoJek and Grab apps work for short rides; pre-book transfers for long ones
  • SIM card: Get a Telkomsel SIM at the airport ($10 for 30 days)
  • Best time: April–October (dry season)
  • Budget: $50-100/day for comfort; $200+/day for villas + fine dining
