Weekend in Amsterdam — 48 Hours of Canals, Art & Coffee

A 2-day Amsterdam itinerary with the Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank House, the Jordaan, and where to bike like a local.

TripSketchApril 23, 2026

Amsterdam in 48 hours is a near-perfect city break. Compact, walkable, English everywhere, and packed with world-class museums you can actually finish in an afternoon.

This itinerary balances the must-sees with the local Amsterdam — coffee, cycling, brown bars.

Day 1: Centre, Canals & Anne Frank

Morning (8am): Walk through Dam Square, see the Royal Palace from outside (entry €12 if you want), then head toward Begijnhof — a hidden 14th-century courtyard most tourists miss. Quiet, free.

Anne Frank House: One of the most powerful museums in the world. Book online two months in advance (€16). Tickets sell out daily. Allow 90 minutes.

Mid-morning: Walk through the Jordaan — Amsterdam's most picturesque neighborhood. Quiet streets, narrow houses, boutique shops. Stops:

  • Noordermarkt (Saturdays = farmers market)
  • Café 't Smalle (the prettiest canal-side terrace)
  • De Kaaskamer for cheese tasting

Lunch: Foodhallen in Oud-West (10-minute walk) — covered food hall with 20+ vendors. €10-15.

Afternoon: Canal Cruise (€18, 1 hour). Yes it's touristy. Yes it's worth it. Pick an evening cruise if you can — the canal houses lit up are magic. Those Dam Boat Guys runs small open boats with bring-your-own-snacks ($45).

Sunset: Sit on the Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge) with a beer from any nearby supermarket. ~5pm-6pm light is perfect.

Dinner: Pllek (industrial canteen on a beach across IJ) or De Kas (vegetable-forward in a greenhouse, €65 tasting menu).

Late night: De Sluyswacht — a 17th-century brown bar leaning over a canal. Looks like it'll fall in. Tiny inside; sit outside.

Day 2: Museums, Vondelpark, De Pijp

Morning (9am): Rijksmuseum (€22.50). Book online. Plan for 2-3 hours. Don't try to see everything — the Gallery of Honour with the Vermeers, Rembrandts, and Night Watch is the essential 1-hour version.

Late morning: Choose one of:

  • Van Gogh Museum (€20, book ahead) — 3 floors, his entire life. Most impactful.
  • Stedelijk Museum (€20) — modern + contemporary
  • MOCO Museum (€21.95) — Banksy, KAWS, Warhol — fun but not deep

All three are within 200m of each other on Museumplein.

Lunch: Pancakes Amsterdam (1 location near each museum, but the original is on Negen Straatjes) for Dutch pancakes — savory and sweet. €10-14.

Afternoon: Vondelpark — Amsterdam's Central Park, with bikes. Rent a bike for €15/day from MacBike and ride through. Continue south to De Pijp:

  • Albert Cuyp Market (street food, stroopwafels fresh off the iron)
  • Heineken Experience (€25 — fun but optional)
  • Sarphatipark for a coffee in the sun

Late afternoon: Coffee at Scandinavian Embassy or Lot Sixty One (both in De Pijp). World-class third-wave roasters.

Evening — choose your vibe:

  • Foodhallen for casual food + drinks
  • A'DAM Lookout — 20-storey rooftop with a swing. €15.50 + €5 for the swing. Sunset views over the IJ.
  • Concertgebouw — classical concerts most nights, world-class acoustics

Dinner: Spectrum (Michelin 2-star) for fine dining or Bar Centraal (small plates, no reservations, walk-in only). Or Toscanini in the Jordaan for Italian.

What to skip

  • Madame Tussauds — bad
  • Sex Museum — sticky
  • Anne Frank House without advance booking — you literally can't get in same-day
  • Renting a bike if you don't already ride confidently — Amsterdam cyclists have zero patience for tourists

Practical tips

  • Tickets in advance: Anne Frank House (2 months), Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh (a few days)
  • OV-chipkaart for public transport (€7.50 + load credit) or use contactless on trams/metro
  • Bikes have right of way over pedestrians — look both ways before stepping into a bike lane
  • Tipping: 5-10% in restaurants, not mandatory
  • Coffeeshops sell cannabis — they're legal but be respectful, don't smoke in regular cafes
  • Best time: April-May (tulips) or September. June-August is packed and pricey.
  • Daily budget: €100-180 mid-range
